When should I decline a research request?

You should decline a fixed-fee request if the suggested project falls outside of the scope of the research that you’ve described. For example, a client might ask you to search for records outside of the year range of the records you can access or submit a single-obituary search request with multiple names.

If you decline a request, please send the client a polite message explaining your reason(s) for not accepting it. If possible, suggest another way for the client to get the record(s) or redirect the person to another research provider.

You should decline an open-ended research project request if you aren’t able to submit a proposal that meets your client’s needs and/or expectations.
