I can obtain copies of Chicago death certificates, 1878-1947, at the local Family History Center on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Turnaround time is usually 0-3 days, depending on when you submit your request.
I print the records from microfilm and scan the paper copies at 300 dpi to create a digital image. Then I rotate and crop the jpgs. (I’m happy to adjust the brightness/contrast, but I don’t do that unless you ask me to so that you can be sure no information was accidentally lost in the process.)
—Extracted information (no images) for Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths, 1916-1947 (http://bit.ly/Y8Zfm7) is available at FamilySearch. I can get the corresponding images for Chicago records. Provider mollykennedy can get the corresponding images for any entry in the index.
—Chicago death certificates after 1947 are only available from the county or state. You can purchase many of them from www.cookcountygenealogy.com
—If I’m not able to find the record you need (it’s rare, but it happens), I will let you know how and what I searched and there will be no charge.
