Probate files may include a will, a bond to administer the estate, an inventory of property owned at the time of death, administration accounts of debts owed and debts due, and distribution account of the estate to the lawful heirs. Not every person will have a probate file. Not every probate file will contain every item mentioned. Some may contain bills and receipts for things such as “nursing the deceased while he was ill with smallpox.” Probate files are on microfilm by year and county. A thorough search will be made for your ancestor. The fee includes 3 copied pages which will usually be a complete will. Additional pages of the probate file can be copied by entering a custom request. Records are held at the Delaware Public Archives. I research there on a weekly basis. If a record is not found, the report will contain all years and counties searched. A recommendation will also be made for further research that may lead to a probate file being found (such as a surrounding county location).
