Research in Lowndes Co., GA can be challenging because the courthouse burned in 1858 and 1869. Many records that we would ordinarily look at, are missing.
The population in Lowndes Co., GA more than doubled between 1830 and 1840. Some of this population growth is reflected in the 1834 tax list, with a number of “new surnames” in the county, compared with the 1830 tax list.
The 1834 tax record includes people who owned property, (sometimes their agents, trustees, administrators of their estate, or their guardians. Occasionally it mentions that an individual is a widow, or a minor or the “parent of __”.
The tax list also includes men who did not own property, and only paid the Poll tax.
One benefit of the tax list compared to the 1830 and 1840 Federal Census records, is that all adult men are listed.
The list was completed by November 1, 1834 when a report was sent to the “Camp. Genl. of Georgia.”
