For the past year I have been doing obituaries, birth registers, death registers, and tombstone photos with great success. Having just completed a genealogy class, I am looking forward to branching out into other areas. I am a retired military spouse, enjoying my “new to me” lab rescue, and am always trying to get caught up on knitting, crocheting and sewing.

Hi Mary, I just found this site and I am excited to see that you are offering so many look-ups! My name is Shellie and I was born and raised a little north of Pittsburgh. I am also a military spouse - my husband retired from the Army in 2006. We live just outside of Atlanta now and I've been working on my family history for the past 2 yrs. Last year I collected enough information to visit Poland and my ancestral village on my paternal grandfather's side. I will be sending you many requests now that I've found you! I wish I could be there to do it myself, but when I make it back to Pittsburgh, it's usally over a weekend and everything is closed! Most of my family were in Westmoreland, Washington and Beaver counties, but I have also been exploring my step-father's family who were in Allegheny county. It’s always exciting to meet a new person on-line, looking for information in the Burgh. I love my city! The birth and death records are such gems when something is located there, but the reporting system just wasn’t what it should have been in those days. A good way to expedite the search is to know where the person was living when they were born or died. The records cover 5-6 areas. I am able to expand the marriage applications years, the records downtown are open to the public and I was recently directed there. I have also dabbled in divorces, but they are complicated, cumbersome, and there is a gap due to a fire. If you are interested in divorces, I will see if I can give you the link to the index, with directions on how to use it, and we can go from there.

Hello - I am looking for a death notice for a Edward Getchell born in Pittsburg 1871 unknown death I have him in the 1930 Pittsburgh census I'm guessing he died between 1930 & 1948 is it possible to look this info up Thanks Bill

Unfortunately, the years 1914 through 1962 are not indexed at the library. The whole date of death would be needed.

Hi! My name is Staffan Folke, I am from Sweden. One of my grandfathers brothers, Axel Gideon Sarwe (Sarvey in US) immigrated to the USA in 1912. In the US Census of 1920 he lived in Allegheny togheter with his wife Ellen and two daughters, Viola and Julia. I have got help from Genlighten to find a divorce index from Cook county, Illinois, where an Axel Sarvey and Ellen W Sarvey divorced in 1927. But we are not really shure it's the right persons. The divorce papers include the information that Axel and Ellen Sarvey was married 18 may 1918. We don't know where, but if they lived i Allegheny 1920 it could be the place where they married. So we really hope you can find a record. Axel Gideon Sarvey is born in Sweden 8 April 1890 His Fathers name is Oskar Fredrik Sarwe (Sarvey) and his mothers name is Maria Kajsa Olson. Hi Mary -- I am potentially interested in looking up a number of Pittsburgh marriages, but I have a couple questions, if you don't mind. In other states that I've researched, marriage records list the parents of the bride and groom, including sometimes the bride's mother's maiden name. Is this not the case with Pittsburgh marriage records? Also, for your service to look up these marriage applications, in what form do you return the record? Thanks for your time! Tammy

In checking a 1914 marriage application that I have on file, it lists the parents of both bride and groom and the maiden name of both mothers. If you could give me the years you are interested in, I can check my stash in order to be more specific. These forms are pre-printed and the information is filled in by hand. Sometimes there are blanks when the information wasn’t provided, or not known. If either the bride or groom was under the age of 21, there would also be a consent form signed by a parent or guardian. My files download and transfer as JPG files.
