FAQ for this lookup

Dear Martha, Thanks for your question. A list of graduates of the University of Glasgow up to 1896 is available online for free at http://www.universitystory.gla.ac.uk/alumni/ This includes an entry for 'John Douglass' which fits with the information you have given. Further information given about him is "Filius natu maximus Roberti agricolae in parochia de Kilmore et comitatu de Armagh" - oldest son of Robert, farmer in the Parish of Kilmore and County of Armagh. I have access to various published sources on students of the University at Glasgow. Further information on the records the University holds are given at http://www.gla.ac.uk/services/archives/collections/universityarchive/studentrecords/ (unfortunately the public searchroom is currently closed). Although these records might reveal more about John's time at the University of Glasgow, they would probably not contain much more information on his family background. Unfortunately, I do not have access to many Irish records. However, if John was living in Scotland in 1841 it may be possible to find a record of him in the 1841 Census. Please feel free to contact me at enquiries@myainfolk.com if you have any further questions. Best regards, Kirsty F. Wilkinson My Ain Folk
A transcription of the GRO indexes are available for free at http://freebmd.org.uk/ - for deaths the indexes are fairly complete up to the 1930s but there are few records later than that. The full GRO indexes are also available on several subscription websites including www.ancestry.com - from the US you may need a Worldwide Subscription to access them, I'm not certain. There are also some indexes available to the copies held by Local Register Offices - these give different reference numbers. These include http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/ for Cheshire and http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ for Lancashire. The coverage of these indexes is incomplete but the websites give details of what is included. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any further assistance. Regards, Kirsty F.
