Many Union veterans of the Civil War and their widows received pensions from the federal government in the years after the War. Several different laws were passed, qualifying veterans and widows based on injury or age. The application files can range from just a few pages to a few hundred pages. Information can include proof of service, proof of injury, proof of age (i.e. date of birth), proof of marriage, and affidavits containing children's names. Depositions from friends, neighbors, family members, and fellow soldiers are common. In this lookup, I will search for your ancestor in the Civil War pension indexes, and, if found, obtain a copy of the pension file -- up to 150 pages -- from the National Archives in Washington DC.
