When should I decline a research request?

You should decline a research request if the project falls outside of the scope of the research that you’ve described or if you aren’t able to carry out research that meets your client’s needs and/or expectations.

If you decline a request, consider sending a brief message to tell the client why you declined, e.g., out side your areas of expertise, records not available, unable to take on new projects at the moment. If possible, suggest another way for the client to get the record(s) or redirect the person to another research provider.
