About Me

My location in Fargo, North Dakota, places me close to the people and records of the Northern Plains. Various genealogy research projects have provided me experience with such diverse times and locations as colonial Connecticut, Maryland, and New Sweden, 19th century Baltimore, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, and throughout the Midwest. I have successfully found the home villages for German from Russia, German (Wuerttemburg), Norwegian, and Hungarian families that immigrated to the United States.

I apply rigorous standards and methods to unraveling complex as well as simple genealogical questions. Currently, I am a member of the faculty teaching for Boston University: modules on reliable resources, and on research planning and reporting in the “Genealogical Principles” course, and the module on evidence evaluation and documentation in the “Genealogical Research” certificate course.

Research Services

I will work with you to:
• take your ancestry another generation deeper;
• fill out family trees;
• break through your “brick wall” blockage;
• complete your lineage application;
• track down the truth behind those family legends;
• conduct local research in the North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota area.

Excellent experience. My project was not an exciting one, but very important to me. My request was handled quickly, professionally, the fee was reasonable, communication was prompt and clear. The final report is exactly what I had hoped. I will be back to this professional with other (and more interesting) problems! Thank-you.

"Dr. Gary Ball-Kilbourne greatly exceeded my expectations. I had one primary question. Dr. Ball-Kilbourne went back five generations and revealed family history, a great deal of which we were unaware. He produced a 30-page report with scans of many original documents. Reading my grandfather's obituary and death certificate was an emotionally moving experience. I never met him; he committed suicide when my mother was three years old. Inexplicably, this report connected me to my family history in a more meaningful way than I could have possibly imagined."

Most projects require a contract signed by both client and researcher in advance of work being started.

For most projects, we will negotiate an agreed upon number of hours for research and preparing the report or other work product. If I finish in less than the authorized amount of time, you only pay for the actual amount of time spent.

Some projects will incur expenses for such expenses as copies, fees for obtaining vital records, postage, mileage at the current IRS rate, and parking. An agreed upon limit will be part of our contract. I will not exceed that expense limit without first contacting you and obtaining your permission. You will receive an itemized accounting of expenses.

You will not be charged for memberships or subscriptions I have if those permit me to obtain records or information for your project. Those are part of my overhead.
